        Food For Thought:
The Sages say that King David came to God one day and asked “why am I not honoured like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? What separates them from me?” God responded “I tested Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and they exceeded my expectations”. The ambitious King David requested “test me and I will prove myself”. It is then that the servants of God fired an arrow that ripped the curtain exposing the sight of Batsheva bathing on a nearby roof. We all have our tests in life, we may be defined by them or pass them by without noticing. This ancient story tells us never to invite these tests into our lives. It is far better to allow greatness to seep into our lives, like the tests that go unnoticed.

The three most important generations in Jewish history are those of the first ancestral generations. Abraham and Sarah stepped forward to begin a vision, Isaac and Rebecca secured that vision through personal trauma, while Jacob, Rachel, and Leah pushed the envelope to define the vision. This is why we honour them as our ancestors, through our prayers, and consider them eternally relevant. We study them again and again, because their human frailties speak to us and their exceptional drive toward their vision inspires us. Through it all, we are reminded that it took three complete generations to arrive at the destination set out by Abraham and Sarah. One of the most powerful lessons they teach us is that the journey of a life takes longer than a lifetime.
